Fantastic Siberian tigers
Siberian tigers are considered the most beautiful of all tigers. There are very few of them left in the world. They only live in one small area in south eastern Siberia. Siberian tigers are the heaviest of all felines (big cats). Males can weigh up to 300kg. They’re fantastic hunters. Their sense of smell is good, but hearing is their best sense. Let’s find out all about the fantastic Siberian tigers.
(Tiger’s strong muscles make them the most powerful of all the big cats. They also have other excellent hunting weapons.)
Striped coat
Tigers are the only felines with striped fur. No two tigers have the same stripes. Siberian tigers’ stripes get lighter in the winter so they’re not easily seen in the snow. Their fur grows thicker in the winter too. It protects them from freezing temperatures, which can go down to -40℃!
Thick, straight whiskers
Each hair on a tiger’s body is linked to the nerves in its skin. The thick, straight whiskers are around its mouth and eyes. Tigers sense things with their whiskers so they know what’s around them even on nights when there’s no moon. This means they can move around and find prey even in the dark.
Razor – sharp claws
Tigers can pull their claws in and out when they want. They sharpen their claws on tree. This protects the claws and keeps them sharp and ready to use. When they catch and kill prey, they bring their claws out. They can be 6cm long.
Scissor teeth
Tiger’ canine teeth can be up to 8cm long. Their molars are very sharp and slice meat like scissors.
Radar eyes
Tigers’ eyes are close together and on the front of their head. This helps them to see in 3D (three dimensions). They can’t see colors. But at night they can see five times better than humans.
(An Indian proverb says that tigers are such careful and cautious hunters that they can ‘hide behind a single blade of grass’. Here’s how these masters of the jungle hunt…)
Giant appetite
Adult tigers need 30kg of meat each day. They have a varied diet. They prefer large prey but will also eat birds, fish and even insects. They begin hunting at dusk, as the sun starts going down.
Silent approach
Tiger move slowly, quietly and carefully nearer to their prey from behind. They try to stay down wind of their prey so that it doesn’t pick up their scent.
Lightning attack
Some of tiger’s preys are fast runners. The tiger crouches low on the ground about 10m away from its prey, ready to attack. The tiger springs just as the animal realizes it’s in danger. In two leaps the tiger catches it.
Quick death
Buffalos weigh 900kg that’s about four or five times as much as an adult tiger. The tiger jumps on the buffalo’s back to knock it over. Then it bites its throat with its powerful jaw. The buffalo is dead in less than two minutes.
(There are very few Siberian tigers left in the wild. Fortunately, they can reproduce successfully when they are kept by humans. Humans are trying to protect cubs!)
How many tiger are there left?
There are about 400 adult Siberian tigers and 100 cubs in the wild in Russia and China. There are 500 in zoos around the world.
Why are there so few?
Siberian tigers were hunted for their skin and also for their bones, which are used in Chinese medicine. They were also killed by farmers who were worried about their flocks being attacked. Today hunting tigers and trading in tiger goods is illegal.
Why are they raised in zoos?
So that the species will survive. Zoos put them in pairs of unrelated males and females. A female tiger has an average of 2 or 3 cubs per litter. The cubs can be bottle fed if their mother doesn’t look after them.
Are they still endangered?
More and more of the forests are being cut down for wood. This means that tigers are being pushed off their home and the number of their prey is getting smaller and smaller. Tiger skins and teeth are still sold illegally so illegal hunters are still laying traps for them. Tigers are in serious danger.
What are humans doing?
Tigers are magnificent creatures and it would be terrible if there were no tigers in the world in the future. Luckily, many people fear this, and they are working hard to help save the tigers left in the world. Many people join wildlife organizations. One organization is called Wildlife Conservation Society. It helps to make safe places for the tigers to live in.
