On his first day at the Longfeifei Youth Summer Camp 2010, Jeffrey Wu learned for the first time
about the individual sounds "which make up the Mandarin language" in his Primary Mandarin Class with
Teacher LuLu. Teacher LuLu, who holds a Master's Degree in teaching Mandarin as a Second
Language and teaches full time at the Fudan International School. Teacher LuLu believes in the
importance of balancing fun with actual learning in her Primary Mandarin class.
Campers in the Primary Mandarin class are learning basic knowledge of Pinying & Chinese
characters and common phrases. Teacher LuLu engages the campers in a variety of interactive learning
methods during the daily three-hour class. These include small group writing projects, book reciting,
reading letters aloud, written exercises on the blackboard and small group competitions. Students seem
interested and are participating in the class.
Said Lilly Yang, "I think that this class is pretty good. Usually, teachers who teach Mandarin do not
speak such good English. Our teacher is a very good teacher and also speaks very good English."
Indeed, Teacher LuLu is clearly working hard to help the campers learn Pinying. For example, campers
made "Pinying cards" in class to take to their dorm rooms or home for further practice.
Some campers are enrolled in the Primary class all three weeks while others are enrolled for a
week. Teacher LuLu will try to cover five major sections of language & vocabulary over the three weeks -
(1) School, Classmates & Teachers, (2) Hanging out with Friends, (3) Family, (4) Four Seasons and (5)
Food & Clothing.
The recent remake & release of the “Karate Kid” is set in Beijing. This is having a big impact on
audiences worldwide. The first day of Kung Fu Longfeifei class at Longfeifei Summer Camp was no less
of a knock-out for campers who attended this afternoon.
Taught by senior instructors Tank and Cheng, the class introduces Kung Fu's basic stances,
punches, blocks and kicks. Teacher Tank has been teaching Kung Fu for 10 years in Shanghai and his
colleague Teacher Cheng has been teaching six years. Both men are incorporating some kickboxing,
rolling & Tae Kwon Do in their specially-tailored class instruction.
Regardless of the age or relative skill level, campers were very impressed by their first day of class.
Camper Graeden Bird was delighted with what he learned and said, "It's great to learn some of the
basics from authentic Kung Fu teachers. I really enjoyed doing some of the exercises in class." Teaches
Tank & Cheng ran the campers through a series of drills, games and practice moves.
It is Teacher Tank's goal not to overload the campers with lots of moves in a short one-week period
but rather to help campers learn a couple of moves well and to better understand the meaning of
Chinese Kung Fu. Given his experience teaching young children, Teacher Tank is particularly adept at
teaching Kung Fu to youth and encourages them to apply themselves in class. Who knows, maybe there
is a future action hero learning his or her Kung Fu fundamentals at Longfeifei...

龙飞飞夏令营的第一天,Jeffrey Wu 在初级汉语课上,跟着Lulu 老师, 第一次知道了“那些组成
汉语”的基本声音。Lulu 老师持有对外汉语的硕士学位,并且是复旦附中国际部的任课老师。LuLu
老师相信在她所教的课上,让孩子们快乐和得到学习成果取得平衡的重要性。
孩子们在汉语初级班中学的基础知识是拼音和日常用语。Lulu 老师运用了各种互动式的学习方法
让孩子们在3 小时的课程内不觉得学习枯燥。包括组成小组写作,复述,大声背诵字词,在黑板上书
写和小组竞赛。孩子们显得很有兴趣,并在课堂上积极参与。
Lilly Yang 说,“我认为这门课相当好。通常情况下,教汉语的老师的英语说不了那么好。我们的
老师很棒,英语也说得非常标准”。事实上,Lulu 老师也的确非常努力地帮助营员们学习拼音。例如,
让孩子们在课堂上制作“拼音卡”带到他们的宿舍或带回家,以便以后再进行实践。
有些孩子参加了三个星期的汉语初级班,而另一些孩子只上一个星期的汉语课。Lulu 老师将尽量
涵盖五个主要部份的语言及词汇(1)学校,同班同学及老师,(2)和朋友玩,(3)家庭,(4)四季
(5)食品及服装。
最近重新发行的新版“空手道小子”讲的是发生在北京的故事,在世界各地的观众中反响很大。
参加第一天的功夫龙飞飞课程的功夫小子们,表现也毫不逊色。
这门课由资深导师Tank 和Cheng 任教,介绍了功夫的基本姿势,拳打、防守、脚踢。Tank 老
师已在上海教了十年的功夫,而他的同事Cheng 也已教了6 年功夫。此外,两人正在将一些拳击,跆
拳道的技术动作,也融入了课程设计。
无论他们的年龄或技能水平,孩子们对第一天夏令营生活印象都很深刻。营员Graeden
Bird 很陶醉于自己所学到的东西,说:“从这些真正懂功夫的老师身上学到入门知识真是太棒了。我
真的很享受在课堂上的那些练习。”Tank 老师和Cheng 老师以一系列的训练,游戏和动作练习来教孩
子们。
Tank 老师的目的不是在短短的一周内,让参加学习的孩子们记许多动作,更多的是帮助孩子们
真正地学会几个动作,并且理解中国功夫的涵义。鉴于他教授孩子们的经验,Tank 老师特别善于教
孩子,并且善于鼓励他们在课堂上现学现用。有谁能预料呢,也许将来会有一个动作英雄,他的功夫
基础就是在龙飞飞夏令营扎下的……

Baidu, Amazon, Google—these are the names of today’s corporate giants in the e-commerce
world. And like these companies’ young founders, some Longfeifei campers are getting a head start on
learning about and experimenting with web design and applications. Teacher Wang Ling, who teaches
computer science full time at the Fudan International School, is teaching this summer’s morning
Webmaster class.
In this class, Teacher Wang is teaching campers about the applications of both “Frontpage” and
“Photo Shop” so that they can create and publish their own personalized web pages on the internet.
Nicolas Guo has found the class interesting and said, “It’s great to create a webpage.”
Given the increasing annual rate of e-commerce over the internet, understanding web design
could be a pretty helpful (and marketable) skill in the future. If nothing else, it might be handy to have
someone in the family who can develop a business or personal interest webpage.
At the end of the week, campers will have completed and published their very own web page, an
accomplishment that’s only a few clicks away on their home computer. And one the rest of the world can
see.
Virtual Robotics for grades 5-9? Is this possible? Yes, the ’virtual’ is a now a reality for campers
who are taking Teacher Wu’s computer-based Robotics class this week. The goal of the five-day
intensive course is to teach campers how to design a software program which can then control a robot in
cyberspace.
Under the guidance of Teacher Wu, campers are learning to direct a robot using “infrared” in a
cyber maze. Some of the skills which the campers are learning include logical and abstract thinking, and
programming.
One enthusiastic student Hu Qimeng said, “This class is always fun and I like it.” This sentiment
seems to reflect the attitude of the whole class. Once the campers go through a number of tasks, they
hope to complete a program at the end of the week which controls a robot through a series of obstacles
to a desired location.
At the end of their second day at Camp Longfeifei, many campers enjoyed a refreshing break
from the Fudan Fuzhong campus and traveled to the Tongji University Swimming Pool. This was a
unique experience for campers to explore the life beyond the close door camp site, to see the world of
Shanghai students and adults alike. The pool is a modern public facility with a huge retractable roof so
that swimmers can see the blue sky of Shanghai as they swim around. The Tongji campus is located
minutes away from Camp Longfeifei.

百度、亚马逊、谷歌,这些都是如今电子商务世界响当当的名字,像这些公司的年轻的创始人一
样,龙飞飞的部份营员将从头开始进行网站设计和软件应用学习。任教的王琳老师是复旦附中国际部
的计算机课程全职教师。
在这堂课上,王老师将教孩子们FrontPage 和Photoshop 的应用,使孩子们能够创建自己的个性
化网站并最终发布到互联网上。
Nicolas Guo 觉得这堂课有意思,并说,“能够创建一个网页,真是太棒了。”
考虑到每年互联网上电子商务网站的增长率,理解网页设计的过程今后是相当有用(也有市场)
的技能。最起码,以后家里便会有人可以方便地开发出一个商业的或个性化的网站。
一周结束时,营员们将完成并发布他们自己的网站,成果是只需在自己的电脑上点击几下便能让
对世界其他地区的人们可以看到。
5-9 年级的孩子设计出虚拟机器人?这可能吗?可能,'虚拟'是夏令营的孩子们在吴老师的计算
机课中要在本周结出硕果的。为期五天,这个密集课程的目标是教会孩子们如何设计一个软件程序,
最终能在虚拟的环境下控制机器人运行。
在吴教授的指导下,孩子们正在学习让机器人直接使用“红外线”摇控技术在网络迷宫里绕障
碍行动。这种技能能让孩子们学会逻辑和抽象的思维方式,并学会编程。
一位充满热情的学生胡琪萌说:“这堂课上充满乐趣,我喜欢。”这种情绪似乎反映了全班的态
度。一旦孩子们完成了一系列任务,他们便更希望在本周末能成功控制机器人绕过障碍,让机器人到
达应该所到的位置。
第二日的龙飞飞夏令营课程结束后,许多营员暂时离开了复旦附中的校园,前往同济大学游泳
馆。对于夏令营的孩子来说,这是一次独特的经历,让他们走出了封闭的营地,有机会体验上海学生
和成人的真实生活。同济游泳馆具有现代的设备,并拥有一个巨大的可伸缩的屋顶,可以让游泳者
在自由地游来游去时看到上海的天空。同济大学校园离龙飞飞营地,只有几分钟的车程。

technology at the High School Affiliated to Fudan University (Fudan Fuzhong) is nationally-known and
one of a kind in China.
For the afternoon class taking Engineering Concept, ‘playing with LEGOS’ has taken on a whole
new meaning. In this Children’s Technology Workshop’s curriculum, campers are learning the basics
about pulleys, wheels, axles, levers and gears and how they are used in daily life.
The course is taught by Teacher Lou Macrae who also teaches the Children’s Technology
Workshop in Puxi. Teacher Macrae’s goal is to help campers see how these applied science concepts
are used in the construction of conveyor belts, cranes, and windmills. Like Teacher Wu, Teacher
Macrae also seeks to stimulate campers’ imagination. She said, “I would like the students to be creative
and also have fun in this class.” To an observer, the classroom is constantly filled with a steady
balance of questions, laughter and noise of LEGO parts being inserted or pulled apart.
One camper, Jason Zhou, said, “I am really having a good time in this class.”
Campers are working on two mini-engineering projects and using their imagination to create small
LEGO machines with or without electric motors. By the end of week, all of the campers will have
completed two projects and perhaps have a new found respect for the usefulness of LEGOs.

空气中飘扬着金属焊锡的余味,夏令营中的孩子们都专注于他们所学的项目。这儿是吴老师教的
上午班小小电子工程师课。孩子们正在学习使用单芯片微处理器(单片机)设计和实施微机操作。
吴老师教授给孩子们多种技能:烙铁的使用、微机的使用、电路板设计、开发计算机程序。吴老
师发现,在短时间内学会各种工具对孩子们来说极具挑战,但孩子们的接受能力很强。
吴老师强调这个课程帮助孩子们开发出创新意识与想像力。由自己来设计电路板要求孩子们认真
思考,如何计划出一个有趣的设计。更重要的是,吴老师希望使营员更具创新意识,并且能流利地应
用技术。
营员 Jonathon Mak 代表了其他营员的意见,他说:“我以前从没上过这样的课,这节课的确很棒。”
营员Ian Hudson 补充说:“这门课当真很有趣”
小小电子工程师课分两个时间段,到焊接室设计电路板,到电脑室编写一个基本的程序来控制他
们的电路板。
营员们的确师从最好的老师,值得一提的是吴老师在复旦附中带的电子技术班在中国是知名的、也是独特的。
下午的课使用到工程的概念,“用乐高玩”被赋于了另一个全新的意义。在这个由Children’s
Technology Workshop (CTW)设计的课程中,孩子们学习着滑轮、车轮、车轴、齿轮和杠杆的基本知识,
以及它们是如何用于日常生活的。
该课程由Lou Macrae 老师执教,她任教于CTW 的浦西园区。Macrae 老师的教学目标是帮
助上课的孩子们明白这些应用科学的概念,它们是如何应用于皮带输送机、起重机建设和风车的。和
吴老师一样,Macrae 老师也注重于激发孩子们的想象力。她说,“我希望学生勇于创新,当然也希望
孩子们能在这堂课上找到乐趣。”我们观察到,整堂课自始至终有提问、有欢笑声,以及在连接或拆
开乐高的零件时发出的各种声响。
营员 Jason Zhou 说:“我真的在这堂课上玩得很高兴。”
孩子们正在进行两个小型工程项目,他们将利用他们的想像力,在有或没有电动马达的情况下
制作出一个小小乐高器械。到本星期结束时,所有的营员将完成两个项目,很有可能发掘出乐高玩具
新的用法。

For Teacher Rebecca Gu, teaching Intermediate Chinese is a rewarding experience. For an observer, she is clearly delighted when she sees a camper understand a point in grammar for the first time or correctly write a new Chinese character.
In this morning Intermediate Chinese class, she is focusing on developing campers’ abilities to advance their basic vocabulary and refine their grammar skills. Specifically, she is helping campers learn sentence order and structure, characters and the way character strokes are made.
Teacher Gu is currently a faculty member at the Shanghai Community International School and has also taught at the Western Shanghai International School. Teacher Gu believes in making the class not only challenging for the students but also fun, too. “I like to give the students games to play during class to help their learning,” she said.
Students practice dialog with each other, do written exercises on the chalk board and answer questions posed by the teacher. She is also helping students learn more useful vocabulary, grammar and integrate both of their writing and oral communication abilities.
For camper Gunn Chaiyapatranun, a veteran Mandarin speaker, this class has been a learning experience. Even though he has had considerable classroom experience with Mandarin, he agrees that he is picking-up new characters and information in class.
In these days of frantic work schedules, computer games and ever present electronic media, it’s nice to be able to sit down, turn off the cell phone and learn a centuries-old tradition. In Teacher Wei Meirong’s class, campers are doing just that by learning about a rapidly disappearing practice—Chinese handicrafts.
In the class, Teacher Wei is helping the campers learn about how to make a Chinese knot, bracelet, and decorative shrimp out of yarn and a lucky star out of beads. She is showing campers about the necessary materials used to create intricate and beautiful arts handy wares and home adornments. As campers can tell, this is very much a learned skill in working with basic products like yarn or beads to produce a small treasure.
This is a fascinating area for many campers. Said camper Carolyn Qi,“I am learning things in this class.” Added camper Isabelle Wu, “It’s nice to get a break from writing by doing the handicrafts work.” For camper Daina Zhou, this is her second time at Chinese crafts and she says that she is still enjoying it.
Teacher Wei cites that today’s busy school schedules make it difficult for youngsters to learn what was almost second nature only a generation ago. With any luck, campers will continue creating Chinese crafts when they finish their projects and return home.

在今天上午的中级汉语课上,她的教授重点是让孩子们增进基本词汇和完善文法技巧的能力。具体来说,她是在帮助孩子们学习句子的顺序及句子结构、字符及比划的组成方式。
顾老师目前是上海长宁国际学校的教师,她也曾在西上海国际学校任教。顾老师相信能将课上得不但让学生们觉得有挑战,而且很有趣: “我喜欢给学生在上课时玩游戏,以促进他们的学习”她说。
学生之间互相练习对话,并在黑板上进行书写练习,并且回答老师提出的问题。她还帮助学生学习更多有用的词汇、语法,整合他们的写作和口语交际的能力。
营员Gunn Chaiyapatranun,有很好的说普通话的经验,这堂课是一次学习经历。尽管他以前曾上过汉语课,他认为在这堂课上学会了新的词汇,得到了新的信息。

尉老师说,如今繁忙的课程节奏让青少年喘不过气来,让孩子们很难学到上一代人所做过的很平常的技艺。如果有幸的话,在这个课程结束后,孩子们回家也会继续制作中国的手工艺品。

Learn the Fundamentals! This is the common refrain for every good basketball coach from the late US college coach John Wooden to Chinese national coach Dong Xie. Faced with a diversity of campers with varying degrees of skill and experience, that’s exactly what Teacher Jin Hong Mei has tried to do with her class of campers. For the last week, the “Fundamentals” have included passing, catching, shooting, dribbling and playing lots of games for campers.
“Basketball is a team sport and it has been my goal through the week to teach collaboration and cooperation among the campers,” she said. “I wanted to teach the kids to be courageous and learn to get up when they fell down or had a bad play,” she added. Teacher Jin’s major obstacle was teaching at each child level and integrating their play. She also shared that more experienced players who were not from Mainland China had difficulty of being still and taking directions.
Camper Wang Xinqi is a newcomer to basketball, and said, “I learned to shoot, pass, dribble and do some tricks for the first time. It was exciting.”
Campers experienced a centuries-old tradition when they took Teacher Fu’s Chinese paining class this week. Teacher Fu taught drawing, paper cutting, Chinese painting, and children’s painting. Each day, campers produced two paintings, usually in water colors.
Overall, Teacher Fu was impressed by the level of cleverness and originality in the campers’ work. Many of the campers found that they had a talent that they did not know they had before taking the class. Said camper Gunn Chaiyapatranun, “I really enjoyed this class. It was very relaxing to do this painting for me.” Teacher Fu noted that Gunn showed great promise in his painting and recommended that he continue developing his drawing style.
Teacher Fu explained that Chinese painting has nearly 1,000 years of history and that it’s not only an enjoyable activity but good for one’s mental health.
In another art class— Chinese Textiles - Teacher Jianmei Xu taught the basic skills of tye-dying and wax printing to the campers. With these new techniques, campers created some beautiful and flamboyant textile designs. This was a rudimentary class intended to teach students about how they could enjoy the arts of Chinese textiles.
Teacher Xu said that the class was challenging for younger students had never tried this type of painting before.
She hoped that this class would inspire students to continue to learn about Asian art.
What was somewhat perplexing as a class dynamic was the formation of groups of campers along lines of nationality. Teacher Xu did her best to integrate all of the students in their class learning.
In Math Olympiad, Teacher Jiani Lou taught the class techniques in patterns, arithmetic sequencing, divisibility, factorization and games like Suddoku. Teacher Lou said, “I wanted to strengthen the kids’ abilities to work on different types of problems.”
Camper Jonathon Mak likes Math as a subject and felt that he picked up some good tips from the week’s class. “I learned about the divisibility rules and a few other short cuts that I didn’t already know about.” Other campers, however, felt that there may have been too much emphasis on working on problems; they would have preferred to have played more games.
One interesting distinction that Teacher Lou made between Chinese Mainland campers and campers from other countries was that the Mainland students were better at following through on solving problems whereas the other campers were not comfortable with this requirement.
She stressed the need to encourage campers to participate in future math competitions in school. She also encouraged campers to persevere and not give up on math problems in school. For every real problem, there is a real solution.

学习基础!这是从美国大学篮球教练John Wooden到中国国家队教练谢东共同强调的, 也是金红妹老师面对一个班中打球技能和经验不同的孩子们,试图让孩子们做到的。在过去的一周中,“基础”包括传球、接球、投篮、运球及玩许多游戏。
“篮球是一项集体运动,我这周的目标是引导孩子们进行相互间的协作和合作。”她说。“我希望能教孩子们在摔倒或发挥得不好时,仍能充满勇气,而且勇敢地站起来”她补充说。金老师最大的困难是教每个水平不同的孩子和并融入整场运动。她对我们说一些来自国外的有经验的球员在保持安静和听取老师指挥方面需要改进。
营员王欣琪是一个篮球新人,他说:“我学会了投蓝、传球、运球并首次运用一些技巧。这真令人兴奋。“
本周,孩子们跟着傅丽老师学习了已有千年传统的中国国画。傅老师教孩子们画画、剪纸、国画、儿童画。每一天,孩子们在傅老师的指导下都完成两幅作品。
总体而言,傅老师对孩子们在创作作品时表现出的聪明水平和原创能力印象深刻。许多孩子在这堂课上被发掘出了许多以前并没意识到的天赋。营员欧阳嘉诚说:“我真的很喜欢这节课。画这类画让我觉得非常放松。”傅老师指出嘉诚在绘画方面很有前途,建议他以后继续发展他的绘画风格。
傅老师解释说,中国画有近千年的历史,它不仅是一个让人愉快的活动,而且对一个人的心理健康发展也很有好处。
在另一个艺术课 - 美妙的纺织艺术课中,徐老师教给孩子们扎染和蜡染的基本技能。学会了这些新技术后,营员们创造了一些漂亮、华丽的纺织作品。这是教会学生如何享受中国纺织艺术品的基础课。
徐老师说,该班是帮助年轻学生挑战以前从未尝试过的美术类型,她希望通过这堂课能激发学生继续学习相关的亚洲艺术。
对徐老师来说,有点令人迷惑的是孩子们喜欢按照自己的国籍组成小组。徐老师尽量让所有的孩子们能够融合到一起。
在英语奥数课上,娄佳妮老师在课堂讲授方式、排序、分割、分解以及玩数独之类的游戏。娄老师说“我想通过让孩子们做不同类型的习题来加强孩子们的能力。”
营员Jonathon Mak很喜欢数学这们学科,觉得本周学到了许多好的技巧。 “我了解了分解规则和其他一些以前我没听说过的简便方法”然而其他营员认为太重视于做题目了,他们原本希望能玩更多的游戏。
娄老师在中国内地的孩子和来自其他国家的孩子间发现了一个有趣的区别,内地学生相对来说有较强的坚持将问题解答出来的特点,而国外的孩子则会感到不自在。
娄老师强调,要鼓励营员参加在学校举行的数学竞赛。她还鼓励营友坚持,不要放弃在学校所学的数学问题。对于每一个问题来说,都有一个切实可行的解决方案。
