The Reader

The Reader

I watched the movie “The Reader” last night, this story is affected me deeply.

The story was taken palace in post-World War II Germany. Occasionally a teenager handsome senior school student named Michael was sick and helped by a mature lady called Hanna on the way his home, but Hanna’s age was twice than Michael’s. Michael seeks out Hanna to thank her, and then the two are quickly drawn into a passionate. They often make love at Hanna’s home, and I found Michael was fallen into this strange love deeply. Hanna was enthralled Michael reads to her book from “The Odyssey”, “A lady with a little dog” and their physical relationship deepens. Until one day Hanna was mysteriously disappears, Michael was left heartbroken. Michael next encountered Hanna likely ten years later, he becomes a law university student, while he attended a Nazi war crime trial. Michael found Hanna was a war criminal in the court, and finally she was sentenced to lifelong in jail. Michael’s real marriage was unhappy, I think he was never forgot his first time, and he choiced to divorce his wife whom was his university classmate. Michael decided to save Hanna whom spent her life in prison, he sent record tape what recorded his reading he have been read to Hanna at that time and books to her. Hanna was illiteracy, she began to learn words from books and wrote letters to Michael. At that time, Michael was her unique relative. At the end of movie, Hanna was suicide before she would release from prison soon, Michael was sad, and he revealed his secret to his former wife at end.

My eyes contain tears after I watched the movie, my wife asked me” Which secret have you keep”, but I said no. Actually I keep one secret in my heart, and I always feel guilty, but I don’t dare to reveal it.

Haven't seen it. I read a few books about NAZI.
The story gives us a description of human nature, such as “Broken Back Mountain” by Ang Lee. But I think the story is truth, although I feel quite depression through the movie, but its remains aftertaste and consideration to me..

I had seen this movie, but never read the novel, so I just got to know the story from the movie.
This is a kind of insight of the tragedy that Nazi had done on the Jews, the question of the ordinary  ...
Quite abnormal sentiment, flashback to they first encountered and did physical relationship, Michael was only sixteen, and Hanna was thirty-six, a great discrepancy. But I noticed some detailed description in the movie. Michael came from a rich family, his father was stern, and his mother always protects him. So I think Michael has Oedipus complex. On the other hand, have you noticed, when Hanna says she needs to change her cloth and ask Michael to wait outside, but Michael peeps through the crack of the door. That means in subconscious Michael has sexual impulse. On Hanna’s side, maybe she was feeling depression and empty, and need a man to satisfy her flesh. She was immorality. When Hanna realized the gaps between the two persons, she decided to leave Michael.

I'd better to read the original novel to get more understand because I have a few knowledge about Nazi and Jew, but I feel Hanna was innocent, she did only obey the Nazi's order.

It's realy a nice movie making me sad. I'll read the novel if available.
Somebody say read novel is better than watch movie, especially for complicated and detailed sentiment description..
