Shanghai has some wonderful opportunities for young people to get involved with local volunteer organizations. As an added incentive, studies have shown that starting volunteering at a young age can lead to a longer life and lower rates of depression and heart disease.

Roots & Shoots (R&S)(根与芽)
As an environmental non-profit organization that focuses on youth-oriented programs, R&S encourages young people above the age of 16 to help with office work – filing reports and paperwork, translating articles and updating our database.
Volunteers also spend time in the community, growing organic gardens in their schools, raising money for the Million Tree Project and planting trees themselves in areas of Inner Mongolia affected by desertification, or teaching younger students about the environment.
According to Executive Director Zee Zee Zhong, R&S are particularly looking for volunteers who are fluent in English and Chinese, with graphic design skills or with skills in website design and maintenance. Once involved, volunteers are expected to stay with their program for at least one semester.

Second Chance Animal Aid (SCAA)
SCAA is a private, non-profit organization committed to protecting and improving the health and welfare of Shanghai’s neglected and abandoned animals.
For middle and high school kids interested in volunteering with animals, SCAA can organize small groups to visit their local project. A visit can be quite an experience as there are 125 cats and five dogs cared for under one roof, all of them in need of grooming and socialization. Although young volunteers don’t need to be accompanied by an adult, SCAA asks that a parent or guardian signs a permission slip.
For more information about SCAA, go to www.scaashanghai.org

You Dao
This non-profit organization is dedicated to improving the lives of Shanghai’s migrant worker population. You Dao currently has two migrant worker centers in Shanghai, in Baoshan and Fengxian. The Baoshan center serves as an activity center for migrant workers’ children on the weekends when their parents are at work, while the brand new Fengxian Family Center offers a wide variety of services to migrant workers and their families.
Every Saturday and Sunday between 2pm and 5pm, volunteers conduct activities at the Baoshan center for 50 to 80 migrant school children from two- to 15-years-old. These activities can include anything from arts and crafts, singing, English conversation, computer classes, basketball, soccer, reading and much more. You Dao welcomes new volunteers of all ages, but suggests that if children under the age of 16 want to volunteer, they have a parent or supervisor accompany them on their first visit.

Heart to Heart
Founded in 2003, this non-profit hospital play-group holds daily afternoon sessions from 2pm to 3:30pm. By offering support and providing entertainment to distract hospitalized children from the spectre of heart surgery, Heart to Heart volunteers provide a vital service – and bringing a smile to the face of a scared, young patient is a reward that’s difficult to put a price tag on.
New volunteers 15-years and over are welcome to join Heart to Heart, but are asked to first undergo a one-day orientation session and be prepared to commit to at least one visit per month.
“Most of our student volunteers are really fantastic. The children decide the direction of the day so volunteers have to be flexible. It’s really hard to plan activities in advance [without knowing the ages of the children who will be in the playroom on any given day],” founder and executive director Christine Cullen said.

Habitat for Humanity (HFH)
Initially founded in 1976 as a non-profit Christian organization dedicated to eliminating poverty worldwide, 33 years after the first Habitat home was built in Zaire, the international organization opened its Shanghai office and mobilized 100 volunteers for its first build in Zhejiang.
This organization is always open to student involvement and has developed a special Youth Program, which includes student-led campus chapters. These chapters raise awareness both at school and in the community, and also get hands-on in the construction of homes for families in need. Also part of the China Youth Program, Global Village Build transports students to sites in Guangdong, Guangxi, Yunnan and Sichuan where they encounter new communities and cultures while building homes for impoverished residents.

Fundraising for Furry Friends
Year 7 student Cameron Lawrence loves animals so much she took it upon herself to raise money for Jaiya’s Animal Rescue (JAR), a non-profit small animal rescue group committed to protecting and improving the health and welfare of Shanghai’s animals.
“I just love animals and I hate to see them mistreated. So I just want less to be mistreated and more to be adopted. So I just want to help them,” the 12-year-old Australian-born, Shanghai-based Lawrence says of her decision to raise money for JAR.
After finding two kittens on the street and re-homing them, Lawrence came across JAR and her family got involved by fostering cats in their Pudong home. Wanting to contribute more to the cause, Lawrence started collecting second-hand books to sell at JAR’s adoption days.
After her first book sale, she has already raised RMB 1,760 (an impressive feat in just a few short hours), and Lawrence is now on the lookout for more books in English and other languages.
If you can donate books for Cameron Lawrence to sell, or if you are interested in helping out at her stall on JAR adoption days, you can contact her through the JAR website, http://jargroup.doodlekit.com. She is available to pick up books from around Shanghai.
